CHELSEA you write

"Today, few people know that lions, hyenas, and leopards are all native to Europe but were eliminated from the continent by human activity in antiquity. As historian Richard Hoffmann notes in his book An Environmental History of Medieval Europe, lions, hyenas, and leopards had “vanished from Mediterranean Europe by the first century BCE, and bear populations in both the Balkans and the Apennines were much reduced.”.........AND FOR A DAMNED GOOD REASON !!!

ALL THESE LARGE ANIMALS EAT MEAT including unprotected and feeble HUMANS !

Bears are known to still kill and eat humans , even those who "delusionally befriend them" !

"Timothy Treadwell and Amie Huguenard (2003): Known as the "Grizzly Man," Treadwell and his girlfriend were killed and nearly fully eaten by an older male grizzly in Katmai National Park. An audio recording captured the attack, and human remains were later recovered from the bear's stomach."

"Polar bear attacks on Inuit people occur often , particularly as bears increasingly venture into communities seeking food and forcing Inuit to manage these threats through coordinated community protection, hunting quotas, and traditional knowledge to ensure safety while coexisting with the animals . "

In Longyearbyen , Svalbard , you are NOT allowed to leave the town without taking a rifle for protection against polar bears ! [ It is considered to be inconsiderate to expect other people to RISK THEIR LIVES to come to your aid if you are attacked by a polar bear OR to have to retrieve your-remains ! ]..

New Zealand provides a relatively recent example of an overkill extinction.....perhaps !

"In only 100 years, humans exterminated 10 species of moa, along with at least 15 other kinds of native birds, including ducks, geese, pelicans, coots, the Haast’s eagle, and an indigenous harrier.

Based on scientific analysis of its size and strength, the extinct Haast's eagle (Hieraaetus moorei) was likely capable of killing and carrying off a young child, lending credence to Māori legends of the pouākai .....As the largest eagle known (up to 18 kg/40 lbs with a 3-metre-wingspan), it was capable of preying on large, heavy animals, making it biologically possible for it to carry away small humans." THAT SOUNDS MORE LIKE SELF-PROTECTION TO ME THAN ANYTHING ELSE !.

.

CHELSEA , it is "nice" now that HUMANS have largely "tamed their environment" and made it "LIVEABLE" , at least as regards most 'natural disasters' and large wild animals , that "we" can safely and selectively allow some 'wild animals' to proliferate in some regions of the world !

They are all doing VERY WELL in the Chernobyl area as there are now very few humans still living there and the forests are regrowing etc. Reintroducing or "re-wilding" some of the US national parks with wolves , bison etc SEEMS to be becoming acceptable and even beneficial.

Not too sure about DINGOES in Australia though ! They are normally shy and distant from us !

"Nineteen-year-old Canadian backpacker Piper James died on Australia's Fraser Island in January 2026 after a dingo attack, with a coroner ruling the cause as drowning due to being forced into the water by a pack. Her body was found surrounded by dingoes, with injuries indicating she was mauled." NOT GOOD FOR TOURISM EITHER !

Crocodiles and some species of sharks STILL NEED TO BE REDUCED IN NUMBER and even ELIMINATED IN SOME CASES as they still predate humans. .........As in one such awful encounter :

"On March 29, 1987, 24-year-old American model Ginger Faye Meadows was killed by a saltwater crocodile at Kings Cascade waterfall in Western Australia's Kimberley region

She was swimming in waist-deep water against warnings when a 4-metre-crocodile attacked ."

and you can't outswim a crocodile.....or a large shark ! These are MUCH BETTER TACKLED on a

dinner-plate as part of an "Australiana Menu" , cooked and served along with salad and chips !
