This is such a fascinating intersection of ideas-- progress, spirit, terror, guilt, witch history-- all rolled into one. Wonderful piece!

Rougemont Castle in Exeter, England was the location where the last people were officially executed for witchcraft in England. The three women, Temperance Lloyd, Mary Trembles, and Susannah Edwards, were tried at the castle in 1682 and then hanged in Heavitree.

The women were known as the "Bideford witches," despite being tried in Exeter.

They were convicted based on hearsay, including accusations of causing illness

and one of them confessing to a belief in sorcery.

.

A plaque commemorating them is located on the ruined gatehouse of Rougemont Castle.

Had they all survived we would be left wondering which witch is which wouldn't we !

Incidentally , the castle ruins and surrounding gardens are really beautiful and well worth a visit !
